9/27/18

Today in class we were finishing up our map plots for the people who didn't finish. I finished it yesterday so today I just studied the map and where all the locations were located just in case we have a test to do later in the week. I also read some of my book for English class because I will have to turn in a assignment next marking period that will be a big impact on my grade. I had a shadow in my class named Johnathan and I have known him for a very long time. He sat next to me in class and wanted to learn a lot about John Carrol and how the system works. There was conversation going on about where the places were located because they were really hard to find even on google. People were panicking that they wouldn't finish on time but then for a while the room got quiet and everyone was walking up to the teacher to hand in there papers. Then class was dismissed and I went on to the next class.

plot location on map

We were working on maps and the continents and oceans look on them. We put the Equator, prime meridian,  nation of our origin, all seven continents, all five oceans, international date line, tropic of Capricorn, tropic of cancer, and John Carrols location on the maps. All the maps were different so it was a little difficult to put all those things on the. One map was stretched out, One map only showed half of the map and the other map was like the ones we usually use today. A lot of people were yelling so it was hard to focus sometimes but it was a fun activity and a good experience in how to put things on maps. Also to put the things on the maps we had to read where they were on the class maps and that taught us how to read maps to. The best part about it is that the assignment wasn't really that hard it was just work that we had to think a little bit on. That's what we worked on, we plot places on maps and learned how to read them.

9/25

We talked about longitude and latitude and what it looked liked on the map. We were talking about different time zones and where they are in the world and how it affects people in life today. Some people in the world think that  every time zone is the same when it really isn't. And if the were the same there sun would have to be shining on the earth on both sides and thy would have to do it on the bottom and top.  I know that there are different time zones because different countries have different seasons at different times. If the earth rotates on its axis it will be different time zones. Also work wouldn't be able to get done if everyone  is asleep at the same time so people should be awake so there ready to work and while there sleep other people are awake doing work so everything is in balanced. So that's why we have different time zones.

maps

WE wrote notes on maps and we watched a video. On how people thought that the map we usually use today was the right map when it is actually not the right one its the wrong size of all the countries. People were offended by the sizes of the countries on the map because that makes it seem like one country is more important then the other. So when this happened the people would have war because they thought the map was a problem. We also Looked at a map to where the countries look like the way they really look like. The other map made  it look like Greenland was half the size of Africa. When Africa is actually 4 times bigger then Greenland. It showed up like that when it was on the original map and it showed up the wrong way on the mercader map.

what we did in class

We wrote notes on a map and how longitude and latitude works on a map. WE also worked on where the continents are. We discussed on how people used to think that the world was just Asia and there was no other civilization.  Even though they thought there was no civilization there was other people in other places called Native Americans and they made civilization while the other people were doing there civilization. Life was hard back when they thought the earth was flat. There was no real medicine that helped and life expectancy was short. During these times there was no houses made out of brick. They all were made of clay or they were made out of hay. Houses weren't study and they probably got the food from the river or a lake.

The test

Today in class we took a test about Elbert Hubbard and Socrates. The test was not an open note quiz, it was all about remembering what you studied. At first I was nervous but then when I opened the packet I found that most of the questions were questions that I already knew. While I was studying for the test I also was thinking about how to get the test done in one class period since we only had one class period to do it. The test was multiple choice and short answers. The multiple choice answers were pretty straight forward  but the short answers made me have to think a little bit. It wasn't that hard to where I couldn't figure it out but it just took a little time to finish all the short answer questions. The multiple choice questions were just process of elimination and it really helped me understand what the answer is and how I got it. At the end of the day I think I did a good on the test.

today in class

We talked about the notes we wrote and we worked on how to be organized. WE talked about that there is going to be a essay that were doing next week and it is worth a 100 point its and a big part of our grade. Mr. Shick told us how we can get a good grade on the test. We are not having class next week Monday so there is not test and we do not have to write a blog. Then we revied over why Socrates was killed. It was because he was being a nag to kids about  gods and beliefs and religions. Also people are talking about they should sit in the back with there friends and there talking about how it would be a benefit for them to be able to sit next to there friend and how much work they will able to get done. The teacher is thinking otherwise and still thinking about moving them both to the front so he can keep an eye on them. What also happened in class is that there was not really that many people there and they are all at sport games and there going against be lair high school.

what we learned in mr schick class today

Today in class we wrote notes about things that happened in history. We learned about a toxic plant and it helped us understand why Socrates died. Socrates died because a long time ago he was a teacher and he would try to give the children complicated information about god and which one they believed in.They killed him with the hemlock that citizens would brew together into a drink and he had to drink it for his punishment. His execution was illegal in the B.C times. Also Everyone thought he was a hero and was worshiping him like he was a king so when Socrates was executed everyone was upset and was disappointed that he had to drink the toxic plant because he was able to stop wars. We also discussed A lot of people would get sick when they would work in the fields. During this time when they got sick there was no real medicine of how to cure them, sometimes they would use leaches to suck out all the bad blood in there body because that's what they thought could work since they ...

what happened in mr Shicks class today

Today when I went into his class the lights were off so everyone can be calm when they walk in. When the class first began we were talking about our notes. Nobody wanted to say anything when we were talking about our notes because that really boring to most people. Every time the teacher spoke or changed slides on the power point we had to write what was on the power point because it will help us in the long run when well need it to study for something. Then someone asked a question about religion the some asked a question about soles the someone asked a question about do we have souls. Then the teacher asked us what does it mean to us to have a soul and there were many opinions i didn't expect to here like" we have souls so even if our body dies our sole will still be down on earth living a normal life its just that no one well see us." Then the whole class got interested in the conversation and then when everyone realized that you can make class more fun if you particip...

Elbert Hubbard

Elbert Hubbard was an American writer, artist and philosopher that had a lot to do with the arts and crafts movement during that time. He was born Bloomington Illinois June 19, 1856 and lived to May 7, 1915 when his ship was hit by a German submarine. He is from where my family is from in Illinois and actually was born not to far from where my family lives. He was an anarchist and socialist that believed in religions freedoms. He wrote the book "To Carry a Message to Garcia" which presented his belief that Walt Whitman and other poets and authors of that time to be compared to prophets of God, similar to other prophets in the bible. The phrase "to carry a message to Garcia " was a story of a soldier name Rowan that was given a message by the United States President to deliver to General Garcia a leader in the Cuban insurgents. Rowan carried out his assignment with initiative and absolute focus and did not stop until he achieved his goal. I understand from this...
My days at John Carrol so far were really exciting and a good experience. During my time I made new friends and made a good impression on my teachers. The lunch food is good and all the students treat me like everyone else. The work isn't all that hard, but it is a lot to do. The teachers push me to the best that I can be so I can succeed in life. Also during transition from class to class I think its good that everyone isn't running all around the hallways all the time keeping things as orderly as possible. The classrooms are quiet so people can get there work done and the kids in the class are respectful when people are talking and they don't make fun of people for making mistakes on a work or a sentence.  The kids also know when it is time to have fun and when to be serious.  Also, I have to focus on my work here which means I will have to work to learn the lessons and apply some effort.
